Fiveyearslater,theSolomonfamilyfromChicagomovesintothehouse,nearasmalltowninNorthDakota.RoySolomonhopestostartasunflowerfarm.Everyonehasissues:theirteenagedaughter,Jess,isunhappyaboutmoving,theirsonBenhasbeentraumatizedeversinceacaraccidentwhenJessdrovewhiledrunkwithhimasatoddler,andcrashedthecar.Seriouslyinjured,Benenduresextensivetreatment,recoveringonlytobemute.Theirparents,RoyandDenise,don'ttrusttheirirresponsibledaughter,andarebrokefromallthemedicalexpenses.Roybelievesmovingtothefarmwillhelphealthefamily.
