SummerSonicannouncedonFridaythatthe12-piecegrouphascanceledtheperformanceatthefestival’sTokyoPacificStage,originallyscheduledforAug.20,“duetounforeseencircumstances.” “Wesincerelyapologizetoallofyouandhopetohavetheopportunitytoparticipateagain,”acommentfromMirrorcitedinSummerSonic’sstatement. ThenewsfollowsatragicincidentonJuly28,whenagiantLEDscreenhangingabovethestagefellandstruck27-year-olddancer“Mo”LeeKai-yinintheheadduringMirror’sconcertattheHongKongColiseum.Anotherdancer,ChangTsz-fung,29,wasalsoseriouslyinjuredwhiletryingtomovetheheavyscreenawayfromLee. Theconcert,whichwasthefourthofa12-concertseries,wassuspendedrightawayandthetwodancerswererushedtothehospital.Leestillremainsinthehospitalincriticalcondition,whileChanghasbeentransferredtoanotherfacilitytorecoverfromhisinjuries. TheremainingeightshowsoftheconcertseriesorganizedbyPCCW’sMusicNationandMakerVillehavebeencanceled. Meanwhile,localauthoritiesrevealedonFridaythepreliminaryfindingsoftheinquiryintothestageincident,whichwasthemostserioussincethegovernment-runHongKongColiseumopenedin1983andestablisheditselfastheMeccaofCanto-pop. HongKong’sLeisureandCulturalServicesDepartment’sassistantdirectorLeeTsz-chun,wholeadsthegovernmenttaskforce,saidmetalfatigueofoneofthesuspensioncordswas“highlylikelytobethecause”forthecablesnap,butmoretestsandfurtherinvestigationsareneededbeforereachingafinalconclusion.Productioncompaniesinvolvedintheconcerthavereleasedstatementstryingtodistancethemselvesfromtheincident. MembersofMirrorremainedsilentfordays,sparkingarumorthatthegroupmightdisband.Butinrecentdays,themusicianshaveemergedoneafteranotheronsocialmediatoassurefansthattheywillstaytogetherandprayforthedancersinjuredonstage,aswellasanotherdancer,Zisac,whowasinjuredduringrehearsal. Amongthem,AnsonLo(“Ossan’sLove(HongKong)”),whowasonstagewithLeeandChangwhilethescreenfellandhasbeenalong-timefriendofLee,postedonFridayapologizingforhisradiosilenceandthankingfansfortheircontinuedsupport.Hesaidhehasbeentryingtocalmhimselfdownanddigestwhathappened,whileprayingfortherecoveryoftheinjureddancers,andhopingforamiracletohappen.Loalsoassuredfansthathewillmakeacomeback. Theband’smanager,AhfaWong,aveteranTVandconcertproducer—whosteppedinonthethirdnighttotakecontroloftheMirrorshowfollowingaseriesofaccidentsthatweek—alsopostedonhersocialmediaforthefirsttimesincetheincident.Shedeclaredhersupportfortheinjureddancers,statingthatsheandthebandcontinuetopersevere,citinglyricsfromoneoftheband’ssongs,“OneandAll.” ThegigatSummerSonicwouldhavebeenMirror’sfirstoverseasventureoutsideofHongKongsincetheywereformedin2018followingthePCCW’sViuTVrealityshow“KingMaker.” Mirrorrosetosuperstardomfollowingthe2019HongKongprotestsandduringtheCOVIDpandemic,earningalargefollowinglocallyandoverseasamongagrowingHongKongdiaspora. TheirpopularityhasoftenbeencreditedasarevivaloftheCanto-popgenre,whichsawitsgoldenageinthe1980sand’90sduringtheheydayofHongKong’sentertainmentindustry,butsubsequentlydeclinedfrommid-2000sonwards.Their“MIRROR.WEARE”concertseriesattheColiseumwasthegroup’sdebutatthecity’spopculturelandmark.
