TheeffectwasdiscoveredbyHarryMcGurkandJohnMacDonald,andwaspublishedinNaturein1976.Theillusioncanbeobservedwhenoneisaskedtowatchavideooflipmovementsalongsidelisteningtosoundsuttered,apparentlybythesamepersonwhoselipmovementsoneiswatching.Ifthelipmovementsandthesoundsdonotmatch—forexample,ifthelipmovementsindicatea“ba-ba”sound,whereastheauditoryinformationisthatof“ga-ga”—onetypicallyexperiencesanillusorythirdsound—forexample“da-da”.McGurkandMacDonaldhypothesisethattheeffectisduetothefactthatthebrainistryingtomakea“bestguess”,giventheinformationthatiscomingfromdifferentsensesiscontradictory.Theeffectisreportedtobeparticularlysalientwhenthequalityofauditoryinformationispoor,inwhichcasethevisualinformationtrumpstheauditoryinformation(Massaro&Cohen2000).
