Purpose:TheaimsofthestudyweretoadapttheFatigueSeverityScaletoChineseconditionsandassessthepsychometricpropertiesoftheChineseversioninpatientswithmajordepressivedisorder(MDD)andnondepressivepeople.Methods:Atotalof101patientswithMDDand94nondepressivepersonswereincludedinthisstudy.AforwardandbackwardtranslationprocedurewasperformedfordevelopingaculturallyacceptableChineseversionoftheFatigueSeverityScale(CFSS).Validitywasassessedaccordingtoconstructvalidity,internalconsistency,concurrentvalidity,divergentvalidity,andcontrasted-groupvalidity.Results:TheCFSSexhibitedaone-factorstructureinpatientswithMDDandthenondepressiveparticipants.A7-itemversionofCFSSandan8-itemversionoftheCFSSdemonstratedbettermodelfitthantheoriginal9-itemversioninthepatientswithMDDandthenondepressiveparticipants,respectively.Inbothparticipantgroups,internalconsistencyvalueswerewithinacceptableranges.Inaddition,concurrentvalidityanddivergentvaliditywereconfirmedinbothgroups.TheaverageCFSSscoreofpatientswithMDDwassignificantlyhigherthanthatofthenondepressiveparticipants.Conclusion:The9-itemCFSSisavalidinstrumentforassessingfatigue-relatedimpairmentinChinese-speakingpatientswithMDD.However,thetworeduced-itemCFSSversionsshowedbetterpsychometricpropertiesthantheoriginalversioninthepatientswithMDDandthenondepressiveparticipants.
