Whenisthelasttimethatyoulaughed?Imean,reallylaughed.Youknow,notjustkindasmile,andsuperficial,butdeeply,fromyourheartandyoursoulyoulaughed.Whenwasthelasttime?Oneminuteago.Wonderful.IfyouliveinDelhi,IliveinIndia.IfyouliveinDelhiat5o'clockinthemorningintheparkspeoplegettogetherandtheylaugh.Theygo,"HAHAHAHAHA".[laugh]Sometimestheyactuallylaugh.Buttheylikeit.Theyfeelgood.Itseemstoopenthemup.Theycomeagainandagain,everymorningat5o'clock.Peoplegoing"HAHAHAHAHA".[laugh]ThereisadoctorwhosenameisPatchAdams.Andwhenhewasintraining,tobecomeadoctorinWestVirginiainAmericawhenhewasontherotationtotakecareofthekids-pediatrics,inparticularlywhenhewastakingcareoftheverysickkidswithcancerhewoulddressupasaclown,bigrednoseandhugeshoes.Andhewouldwalkintothechildren'soncologyhospital,cancerhospital,andthekidswouldlaugh.Theylovedit.Didn'tmatteriftheydied,theygotbetter,theydidn'tgetbetter.Theylovedit.Theyfeltgood.Unfortunately,theadministrationsawotherwise.Andhewasaskednottocomebackinaclown'soutfit.Unfortunately.Butthentheymadeamovieabouthim.Andthemovieiscalled"PatchAdams".Humorisvery,verypowerfulinhelpingustofeelwell.TherewasamanbythenameofRobertCousins.American.HewastheeditoroftheNewRepublic.Andhegotsick.Allofhisjointsfrozeup.Hecouldn'tmove,andhewasintremendouspain.Sotheyputhiminthehospital.Thedoctorsdidallthetesting,this,thatandtheotherfortwoweeks.Theycouldnotdecidewhatwastheproblem,nordidtheytreathim.Aftertwoweeks,hesaidtohisbestfriend,"Getmeoutofhere!""Pleasedothreethingsforme.Numberone:takemeoutofthehospital,andcheckmeintoahotel."Secondly,hesaidtohisnursingfriend,"PutanIVandgivememassivedosesofVitaminC.25,000gramsaday."Andthirdly,hesaid,"Pleasegotothelibrary,andcheckoutanybookyoucanfindonmyfavoritehumorist."Youknow,humorauthorthatwriteshumor.AndhiswasBennettCerf.Thiswasafewyearsago.Andsothefrienddidallthis,andwouldreadtohimBennettCerf.Andinthehotelroom,RobertCousins,whocouldn'tmove,wasintremendouspain,wouldlaugh,andlaugh,andlaugh,listeningtohisfavoritehumorousBennettCerf.Twoweekslater,hewalkedoutofthehotel,ahundredpercentcured.[laugh]It'satruestory.Afterthat,UCLA,UniversityofCaliforniaatLosAngeles,UCLAMedicalSchoolhiredhimtobeanAdjunctProfessortoteachhumor,toteachlaughtertothemedicalstudentssotheycanusethatintheirpracticewithpeoplethatwerehurting.Sohumorissomethingvery,veryvaluable,andhelpsusfeelmorerelaxedandfeel--onadeeperlevel--happy.I'dliketoturntoasecondpointthatI'dtotalkabouttodaywhichisloveandcompassion.Loveandcompassionactuallymightbe...mightbethe"raisond'être":thereasonforustobealive.Youknow,sometimeswhenwe'reyoung,sometimeswhenwe'reold,weaskourselves,"What'sthemeaningoflife?""WhatamIdoinghere?"Youknow?"WhatamIdoinghere?"Anditmaybethatloveandcompassion,concernforothers,kindness,isourreasonforbeinghere.Thatbringsmeaninginourlives.Itmakesusfeelmeaningful,itmakesusfeelvaluable,anditmakesusfeelhappy.Andthosethatwe'reserving,thosethatwearebeingcompassionateorlovingtowards,theyalsofeelwell.Theyalsofeelhappy.SoIcallthisloveandcompassionawin-winsituation.Youknow,happinessforboth.Very,verypowerful.Activelisteningisoneveryimportantformofloveandcompassion.Youknow,whenyou'rewithsomebodythat'shurting.Maybeyouknowthem,maybeyoudon't.Andtheywanttojustkinda,youknow,letitallout.Andyou'rethere.Ifyoucanberelaxed,andlisten,inanonjudgmentalway.Withoutjudgingthem,andlisten.Itmeanssomuchtothatperson.Italsoenrichesyourlife.It'skindofablessingthatyoureceivetobeabletolistentothatperson'sproblems.Loveandcompassion,kindness,isanincrediblewaytogoforwardinourlivestofinddeeperhappiness.Sometimeswesay,"Well,whataboutme?"That'soldstyleofthinking,youknow.We'retakingcareofourselvesbytakingcareofothers.It'sverypowerful.Icanseeafewoftheheadsnoddingyes.Icanseesomesmiles.Andbecauseofthelighting,Ican'tseeyouverywellintheback.ButIthinkwe'regettingnodsandsmilesfromsomepeoplealso.Youknowthis,butweoftenforgetit.Soit'simportanttocomebackandrememberthis.Loveandcompassion,kindness,activelistening,generosity.Allkindsofgenerosity.Doesn'thavetobegivingmoney,youknow?Wecan,youknow,kindagiveasmile.Somebodythat'slost,wecanhelpthemfindtheirway.Allkindsofgenerosity.It'smutuallyenriching.Thirdpoint.SoI'vetalkedalittlebitabouthumor,andI'vetalkedaboutloveandcompassion,I'dlikenowtoturntomeditation.Thisisverymuchpartofmylife.OK,I'vedonelotsofmeditation.Andit'ssomethingextremelyvaluable.Ingeneral,meditationcanhelpuscomebackandfindourcenter.Itcanbalanceus.Anybodyhereunderstress?Raiseyourhandifyouareunderstress.Okay,there'safewhands.Ithinkmoreofyouareunderstress.You'renotraisingyourhands.You'retoostressful.[laugh]WhatdoesitmeanifIraisemyhand?Weallhavestress.It'spartofamodernsociety.It'spartofourlives.Ithelpsuskindarefocusinthepresentmoment.Whenwe'reoutofthepresentmoment,whenwe'reinthepast,dwellingonthepast,"Ishouldn'thavesaidthat...Argh...Icouldhavedonethatbetter..."Youknow,onandonandon.We'reoutofbalance.We'reoffourcenter.Wedon'tfeelwell.Similarly,whenwe'rethinkingaboutthefuture,"Well,Ishoulddothis...No...Ishoulddothis...MaybeIshoulddoitthisway..."We'reoutofbalance.We'reoffourcenter.Whenwe'reinthepresentmoment,wefeelnourished.Wefeelrefreshed.Wefeelwell.Meditationcanhelpuscomebacktothatcenter,thatbalance,thepresentmoment.Ofcourse,there'salotinmeditation.It'smuchmorethanthat.Itcanhelpusdeveloptheloveandcompassion,itcanhelpusdevelopthewisdom,sowecanrecognizethatouregoisactuallyfalse,anddevelopmorehumility,kindness,gentleness.Meditationisveryvast,butI'mjustgoingtofocusonthisaspectofbeinginthepresent.SowhatIthoughtIwoulddoismeditatewithyouforacoupleofminutes.OK?SoI'dlikeyoutositupstraight,butrelaxedstraight.Yeah,gettheshouldersmoving,justkindarelaxthebodyalittlebit.Okay?Andyoucanuseyoureyesopenorclosed,whatever.I'mlosingmyzenhere,excuseme.Ifyou'dliketoleaveyoureyesclosed,that'sfine.Don'tfallasleep.Iseesomeyawnsalready.Iliketomeditatewithmyeyesopen.I'llkeepmyheadstraight.WhatI'lldoisglancedownlikethis,solessdistraction.ForthismeditationI'dlikeyoutokeepyourmouthsclosed.Ifanyofyouhaveablockednose,then,youknow,keepyourmouthopen.Youhavetobreathe.OK?Ideally,keepyourmouthclosed.Andjustbreathenormally.Youdon'thavetoforceit.Doesn'thavetobebig,little...long,short...justnormalbreathing.Iwantyoutofocusatthebottomofyournose.Righthere.Okay?Focustherewithyourmind.Concentrateonthebottomofthenose.Andasyourairgoesinandoutasyoubreathe,focusonthatatthispoint.Youdon'tneedtofollowtheairin,andfollow...notthat.Justfocusrightatthebottomofthenose.Nowyou'llprobably,mostlikely,quicklyyou'llgetdistracted.Juststartthinkingabout,youknow,ifit'sme,it'schocolatecake,orsomethinglikethat.Whenyougetdistracted,recognize,"Oh,I'mdistracted".Bringyourselfbacktothebreath.Wemayhavetodothatagain,andagain,andagain,andagain...It'sokay.That'smeditation.Okay?Soforabouttwominutes,let'smeditatetogether.Pleasemeditate.Yourhands,ifyou'dlike,youcanputtheminyourlapwithyourlefthanddownandyourrighthandontopandthethumbstouching,pointingup.Okay?Lefthanddown,righthandontop,thumbspointingup,andthenjustrelaxthatinyourlap.Okay?Sopleasemeditate.Andpleasestopyourmeditation.Sometimesourmindisjumpingaroundlikeamonkey.Anybodyexperiencethat?Monkeymind?Yep...Anybodyfallasleep?Sometimeswegettired,toorelaxed.[snore]Anybodyfallasleep?Anybodygoingtobehonestenough?Thankyouforyourhonesty.Yep...that'sokay.Noproblem.Yeah,ifyoulikethis,doiteveryday.Fiveminutes,tenminuteseveryday.Youdon'thavetobeBuddhist.Youknow?Youdon'thavetobereligious.Butthereisonerequirement:youhavetobehuman.[laugh]OK,IwanttoturntothelastthingIwantedtomention,whichiswisdom.Okay?AndinaboutaminuteoraminuteandahalfIwillsayjustafewwordsaboutwisdom.Iliketosay,"Mindthegap".Mindthegap.Youknow,whenyougetofforgetontheMetroinLondonintheUK,alady'svoicecomesoverthespeaker,"Mindthegap".Butthisisnotthegapbetweentheplatformandthetrain.Thisgapisbetweenwhatwesee,whatwehear,whatwethink,ourappearancestothemindandreality.Normallywetakethosetobethesame.Buttheyarenot.Andthatgetsusintoalotoftrouble.Itgetsusintostrongego.I'mbetter,orI'mworse.Youknow,thatkindofstuff.Usandthem.Whenwecanbegintorelaxthistightgripontheego,tounderstandingthatappearancesarenotreal.Theappearanceofmyselfisactuallynotsoreal.Webegintorelaxmore.Webegintoopenupourheart.Webegintobecomemoreloving,morekind,morehumble.Andtherefore,morehappy.Thankyouverymuch.SubtitlesbytheAmara.orgcommunityWhenisthelasttimethatyoulaughed?
