Atherapistthatworksforacompanymayhaveaconflictofinterestifthecompanyisplacingthetherapistinapositionwheretheywantconfidentialinformation. Anotherwaythatconflictofinterestintherapymayoccuriswhenatherapisttreatsmorethanoneclientofthesamefamily.Itisveryimportant,especiallyincouplesorfamilycounseling,toclearlydefinethedegreeofconfidentialityeachpersonbeingcounseledwillhave.Manytimes,therapistswhoworkwithmorethanonefamilymemberwillverydirectlystatethatanythingsaidbyclientsisnotconfidentialtorelatedclients.Ofcourse,thismayaffectthedegreeofhonestypeopleinfamilyorcouplestherapywillexhibit.Ifitseemsclearthatonepersonisstrugglingwithissuesorneedsgreaterconfidentiality,thetherapistmayrecommendthatpersonseekcounselingwithaprivatetherapisttoo. Aconflictofinterestmightbenefitonepartner,butnotboth.
