However,oppositionitselfisn’tasignofmaturity.Oppositionforopposition’ssakeonlylimitsouropportunities,ourperspectivesandthekindofunderstandingthathelpsusgrowasindividuals.Maturityhappenswiththerecognitionofthisfundamentaltruth. Overthelastseveralyears,I’veheardagrowingrhetoricfrombothdemocraticandrepublicanleadersinCongressto“opposeeverything”theadministrationofthetimeproposes.ThisincludesourownOregonSenatorJeffMerkley,whotoldPolitico(Jan.30,2017)thathewouldautomatically“filibusteranyandallSupremeCourtJusticenomineesTrumpputsforward.” Keepinmindthatitwasn’tlongbeforethatwhenRepublicanleadershipinournation’scapitoldidsomethingsimilarbyrefusingtoconsiderPresidentObama’snominee,MerrickGarland,fortheverysameappointment. Andthebeatgoeson. WhileIagreethatanynomineeseekingCongressionalapprovalshouldbescrutinizedfortheirqualifications,toenterintothatprocesswithapreconceivedconclusionandpublicpromisetoautomaticallydenyapprovalmerelycontinuesthekindofpartisanpoliticsthathaveturnedthewheelsofgovernmentintotherustedgrindofricketygearsthatAmericanshavelostfaithin. Perhapsmoreimportantly,thiskindof“obstructionist”mentalityalsorunstheriskofdelegitimizingfuturechallengeswithinoursystemofchecksandbalanceswhentheycouldmattermost.Whereveryoustandontheimpeachmentinquirycurrentlyunderway,thisisn’tthetimetooverreachorgrandstandsimplyforthesakeofbeinginoppositionorplayingitsafewithpartypolitics.AmericansaredividedbecausetheirrepresentativesinCongresshaveallowedthemselvestobecomedividedsimplyonthemeritsofwhichsideoftheaisletheyhappentositon. Oneofthemostbasictechniquesofwinningawaristodivideandconquer.Withoutquestion,wearealreadyanationdivided.OurrepresentativesinCongressmustputasidetheirneedtoconquereachotherandrememberthatthetruecasualtiesofthiskindofpoliticalwararethosewhotheyaresupposedtoberepresenting. Alittlemorethan200yearsago,ournationopposedtyrannyinordertopursuethedreamofbeingfree.Itwaspartofanecessarysteptowardindependence.Ourforefatherswerematureenoughtorecognizethatoppositionitselfwasn’tenoughtosecureournation,butthatitwouldtakeperspectiveandunderstandingtohelpusgrowasindividualsandapeopleunited.
