Youcanonlydosomuchtoundercookthecharactersofacharacterstudy,andit'snotlikethisfilmisintenselyaimingtodojustthat,yetimmediatedevelopmentoffputtinglybordersonall-outnonexistent,andgradualexpositionisn'ttoomuchmeatier,fleshingoutthedepthsofourleadsjustfine,butnotsomuchsothatyoubondwiththisstoryasmuchasyoucouldhave,towhereyoucould,attheveryleast,overlookconventionalism,oratleastasmuchasyoucan.It'sveryhardtomisstheconventionalismwithinthisformulaicindierom-com,whichneverstoodachanceofbeingtoounique,butmuchtoooftenhitsonefamiliarbeatafteranother,drawingfamiliarcharacters,andbuildingaroundthemafamiliarstorystructurethatisnothingshortofripewithpredictability.Itdoesn'ttaketoolongatallbeforeyoufindyourselfhardlycapableofignoringwherethisstoryisheading,andfromthenonthefilmbeginsaslow,butsurespiraldownward,growingmoreandmoreblanduntil,beforetoolong,you'releftwithanunderwhelmingfinalproduct,whichisbroughtdownlargelybyitsconventionalism,butisinnowayhelpedbyitsbloating.Runningamere91minutes,thisfilm,onpaper,doesn'tappeartohaveawholelotoftimetodragthingsout,butwhenyougetdowntothefinalproduct,ohboydoesittrytomaketime,takingonabitofexcessmaterial,-muchofwhichisawkwardlyoverdrawnbybabytooth-loosescenestructuring-aswellasaquantityoffillerthatbordersonawealth,thinningoutplotthat,quitefrankly,can'treallyaffordtobeallthatthinnedout.Neverminditsbeingsounderdeveloped,oritsbeingsogeneric,orevenitsbeingsoexcessivelybloated,becausewhatranksupthere,ifnotstandsaloneupthereisthebiggestissuebehindthisstoryis,ofcourse,itsbeingjustsothininconflict,momentumandallaroundstructure.Thetellingofthisstorygetstobeabitforcefulbecausethere'snotawholelottothisstorytobeginwith,andthere'snothingtooterriblywrongwiththat,becausewe'retalkingaboutaindierom-com,somethingthathasthepotentialtoholdtheentertainmentvaluethatthiseffortdeliversonjustfine,butisn'tenoughtomaketheall-out,bonafidegoodfilmthatthiseffortisn'tentirely.Still,whilethefilmishardlyonetostickinyourmemorybanksallthatfirmly,it'shardnottoenjoyitwhileyou'refollowingit,asitisfairlymovingattimesandconsistentlyentertaining,partiallybecauseofthecolortoitsmusicaltastes.
