TheWesternmusicwaspopularsince1950sastheofficiallanguagewasEnglishatthattime.Also,listeningtoWesternmusicshowedaperson'sgoodtaste.Cantopopwasnotpopularin1950sto1960ssincetheproductionofCantopopwasshoddy.[5]Duringthelate1960sand1970s,MandarinpopsongsweregettingmoreandmorepopularandbecamethemainstreamofHongKongpop.[6]Inthe1970s,HongKongaudienceswantedpopularmusicintheirowndialect,Cantonese.Also,aCantonesesongTaisiuyanyun(啼笑姻緣)becamethefirstthemesongofaTVdrama.Cantopopwasgettingpopularafterthat.[5] Cantopop'spopularityincreasedsharplyduetotheimprovedstatusofthelanguageandthelargeCantoneseChinesepopulationinthecity. Naamyam[edit] Mainarticle:Naamyam CantoneseNaamyam(Chinese:南音;Jyutping:naam4jam1)isauniquenarrativesingingtraditioninCantonesedialect/language,differentfromFujianNanYin.Asingerwouldbeengagedforasingleperformanceorforregularperformancesoveranextendedperiodoftime.Beforethefirsthalfofthe20thcentury,naamyamsungbyblindsingerswasapopularformofentertainmentinHongKongandCanton.Commonvenuesforperformanceincludedpublicplacessuchasrestaurants,teahouses,brothels,andopiumdens,semi-publicclubsandgatheringplacesthatcateredtoaparticulartradeorcraft,suchasbutchersorricemerchants,andprivatehouseholds. Cantopop[edit] Mainarticle:Cantopop Priortothedevelopmentofpopularmusicinthe1960s,HongKong'smusicaloutputwasdominatedbyCantoneseoperaandEnglishpop.ProminentsingersincludedTangKee-chan(鄧寄塵),ChengKuan-min(鄭君綿).ThegodfatherofCantopopRomanTam(羅文)madesignificantstridesintheindustry.TheyouthbegantogravitatetowardsCantonesepopinthe70s. Around1971,SandraLang(仙杜拉)wasinvitedtosingthefirstCantoneseTVthemesong,"TheYuanfenofaWeddingthatCriesandLaughs"(啼笑姻緣).ThissongwasthecreationofthelegendarysongwriterJosephKoo(顧嘉輝)andthesongwriterYipSiu-dak(葉紹德).ThegenrewaslaunchedtounprecedentedlevelswithvirtuallyeveryTVdramausinglocalisedcantopopsongs.OthernotablepioneersforcantopopwereSamHui,JennyTseng,LizaWangandPaulaTsui.
