IncolonialHongKong,pipawasoneoftheinstrumentsplayedbytheChinese,[1]andwasmainlyusedforceremonialpurposes.Westernclassicalmusicwas,ontheotherhand,theprincipalfocusamongstBritishHongKongerswiththeSino-BritishOrchestrabeingestablishedin1895.Inthebeginningofthe20thcentury,Westernpopmusicbecamepopular.Mandarinpopsongsinthe1920swerecalledSiDoiKuk(時代曲).TheyareconsideredtheprototypeofChinesepopsongs.[2]
In1949thePeople'sRepublicofChinawasestablishedbythecommunistparty.Oneofthefirstactionstakenbythegovernmentwastodenouncepopularmusicaspornography.[3]Beginninginthe1950smassivewavesofimmigrantsfledfromShanghaitoHongKong.[4]AlongwithitwasthePathéRecords(HongKong)recordcompany,whichendedupbecomingoneofthemostsignificantpopularrecordcompaniesinHongKong.
TheWesternmusicwaspopularsince1950sastheofficiallanguagewasEnglishatthattime.Also,listeningtoWesternmusicshowedaperson'sgoodtaste.Cantopopwasnotpopularin1950sto1960ssincetheproductionofCantopopwasshoddy.[5]Duringthelate1960sand1970s,MandarinpopsongsweregettingmoreandmorepopularandbecamethemainstreamofHongKongpop.[6]Inthe1970s,HongKongaudienceswantedpopularmusicintheirowndialect,Cantonese.Also,aCantonesesongTaisiuyanyun(啼笑姻緣)becamethefirstthemesongofaTVdrama.Cantopopwasgettingpopularafterthat.[5]
Cantopop'spopularityincreasedsharplyduetotheimprovedstatusofthelanguageandthelargeCantoneseChinesepopulationinthecity.
TraditionalChineseHuangmeiopera,ontheotherhand,hadpeakedinthe1960samongstthegeneralChinesepopulation.

Asan"openeconomy",avastvarietyofmusiciscommerciallyavailableinHongKong.MostretailmusicstoresinHongKongcarryCantopop,Mandopop,importedEnglishlanguagepopmusic,JapanesepopmusicandKoreanpopmusic.Largermusicstores,suchasHMVinHongKong,stockamoreextensiverangewhichincludesclassicalmusic,Cantoneseoperainadditiontotheaforementionedgenres.LikeJapan,audiocassetteshaveneverbeenbigsellersinHongKong.

TheartformisoneofthefirstorganisedformsofentertainmentinHongKong.Theartformstillexiststodayinitstraditionalformatdespitethechangingtrendsinotherindustries.Thereisadebateabouttheorigin(s)ofCantoneseopera,butitisuniversallyacceptedthatthepredecessorsofCantoneseoperaoriginatedfromthenorthernpartofChinaandslowlymigratedtothesouthernprovinceofGuangdonginlate13thcentury,duringthelateSouthernSongDynasty.Beginninginthe1950s,massivewavesofimmigrantsfledShanghaitodestinationslikeNorthPoint,[4]boostingitsfanbase.

CantoneseNaamyam(Chinese:南音;Jyutping:naam4jam1)isauniquenarrativesingingtraditioninCantonesedialect/language,differentfromFujianNanYin.Asingerwouldbeengagedforasingleperformanceorforregularperformancesoveranextendedperiodoftime.Beforethefirsthalfofthe20thcentury,naamyamsungbyblindsingerswasapopularformofentertainmentinHongKongandCanton.Commonvenuesforperformanceincludedpublicplacessuchasrestaurants,teahouses,brothels,andopiumdens,semi-publicclubsandgatheringplacesthatcateredtoaparticulartradeorcraft,suchasbutchersorricemerchants,andprivatehouseholds.

Priortothedevelopmentofpopularmusicinthe1960s,HongKong'smusicaloutputwasdominatedbyCantoneseoperaandEnglishpop.ProminentsingersincludedTangKee-chan(鄧寄塵),ChengKuan-min(鄭君綿).ThegodfatherofCantopopRomanTam(羅文)madesignificantstridesintheindustry.TheyouthbegantogravitatetowardsCantonesepopinthe70s.
Around1971,SandraLang(仙杜拉)wasinvitedtosingthefirstCantoneseTVthemesong,"TheYuanfenofaWeddingthatCriesandLaughs"(啼笑姻緣).ThissongwasthecreationofthelegendarysongwriterJosephKoo(顧嘉輝)andthesongwriterYipSiu-dak(葉紹德).ThegenrewaslaunchedtounprecedentedlevelswithvirtuallyeveryTVdramausinglocalisedcantopopsongs.OthernotablepioneersforcantopopwereSamHui,JennyTseng,LizaWangandPaulaTsui.
In1980s,thesurgeofHongKongpopwaveexpandedrapidly.ThemusicscenewasdominatedbypopiconsLeslieCheung,AnitaMui,AlanTam,andDannyChan.TheindustryusedCantopopsongsinTVdramasandmovies,withsomeofthebiggestsoundtrackscomingfromfilmssuchasABetterTomorrow.TherewerealsomanyCantopopsongsthatwereadaptedfromJapanesemusic.
WhileTVthemesongsarestillanimportantpartofHongKongmusic,thearrivaloftheFourHeavenlyKingstookCantopopastagehigher.Today,Cantopopisthedominantformofmusicwithstrongassociationstopopculture.Recordcompanieshavehadamajoritystakeinthesegment,andHongKongisconsideredthecentralhubofCantopopintheworld.[7]

AftertheCommunisttakeoverinmainlandChinain1949,theMandarinpopmusicandentertainmentindustryshiftedtoHongKong.MandarinalsodominatedthelanguageofcinematographyuntiltheemergenceofCantonesecounterpartsinthemid-1970s.ManysingersfromTaiwancametoHongKongcreatingaspectrumofMandarinpop.TheperiodendedinitsheightwithTeresaTeng.HersongswerepopulareveninmainlandChina.Mandarinpopwilllikelycontinuetogaininpopularity,especiallyafterthe1997handoverwhichmadeMandarinoneofthestandardlanguagesunderBasicLaw.OneoftheTVseriesthatemulatethe60s/70smandopopclubsceneinHongKongistheTVBseriesGlitteringDays.

ThetermEnglishpopinHongKongdoesnotmeanpopmusicfromEngland,butwesternstylepopsongssungintheEnglishlanguage.Inthe1950s,popularmusicofHongKongwaslargelydominatedbypopsongsintheEnglishlanguageuntiltheCantopop'semergenceinthemid-1970s.Manywell-knownCantopopsingersoftoday,likeSamHuiandAlanTam,begantheirearlycareerssinginginEnglish.Westerncultureatthetimewasspecificallyamarkofeducationandsophistication.[8]InspiredandinfluencedbyimportedpopularmusicfromtheWestsuchasElvisPresley,JohnnyMathisandTheBeatles,[3]HongKongartistesstartedtoproduceEnglishlanguagepopmusicinthe1960s.
Today,importedpopmusicinEnglishlanguageremainspopularinHongKong,secondonlytoC-pop.MostHongKongartistsnowsingprimarilyinCantoneseandMandarinandoccasionallyperforminEnglish.ArtistswhoproducedsubstantialworksinEnglishincludeChetLam,ThePancakes,GhostStyle,etc.JackyCheungreleasedanEnglishalbumin2000.OtherartisteswhohavenativefluencyinEnglishincludeJacksonWang,TeresaCarpio,JaniceVidal,JillVidal,KarenJoyMorris,FionaSit,EdisonChen,etc.
Classicalmusic[edit]
WesternclassicalmusichasastrongpresenceinHongKong.OrganisationssuchasTheHongKongPhilharmonicOrchestra,HongKongSinfoniettaandtheHongKongChineseOrchestrareceivessubstantialannualfundingfromtheHongKongGovernmentandothermajorsponsorssuchastheSwireGroup.ThebudgetofHongKongPhilharmonicOrchestrain2002/2003financialyearwasHK$86million,ofwhich70%comesfromTheHongKongGovernment.Theirproductionaddsdynamicstothemusicculture.AllprimaryandsecondaryschoolstudentsinHongKongarerequiredtotakemusicclassaspartoftheirschoolcurriculum.
Electronicmusic[edit]
Beingaburgeoninggenreinthemusicscene,HongKong’shistorywithelectronicmusicisdeepandcomplex.Duringthe70sand80s,artistslikeLeslieCheungandAnitaMuihaveexperimentedwithfusionbetweendiscomusicandCantopop.Inpresentday,undergroundelectronicscenesandelectronicmusicfestivalssuchasShiFuMizFestivalandCreamfieldsHongKongplaysanimportantrolespreadingelectronicmusiccultureinthecity.[9]Meanwhile,localelectronicmusicmusicianssuchasZightandXTIEseektocollaboratewithforeignartists,connectingandbridgingHongKong'selectronicmusicindustrytotheoutsideworld.[10]

IFPIHongKongcertifiesmusicrecordingsinHongKong.LikesomeotherAsiancountries,thesalesrequirementsofdomesticproductsarehigherthanforeignproductsandcertificationsareusuallybasedonsales.Thesalesrequirementsare25,000and50,000copiesforgoldandplatinum,respectively,before2006.Itwasloweredin2006and2008,duetodecliningsales.Thesalesrequirementsare20,000and40,000copiesforreleasesbetweenJanuary1,2006andDecember31,2007.Currently,therequirementsare15,000copiesforGoldand30,000copiesforPlatinum.InternationalrepertoirerequiresonlyhalfoftheGoldandPlatinumawardsfromthedomesticones,sameasclassicalmusicalbums.(Before2006,15,000and25,000copiesforgoldandplatinumforforeignrepertoire,respectively).
