Skiptomaincontent Advertisement SearchSpringerLink Search AbstractBrief,validmeasuresoffatigue,aprevalentanddistressingcancersymptom,areneededforuseinresearch.Thisstudy’sprimaryaimwastocreateashortenedversionoftherevisedPiperFatigueScale(PFS-R)basedondatafromadiversecohortofbreastcancersurvivors.AsecondaryaimwastodeterminewhetherthePFScapturedmultipledistinctaspectsoffatigue(amultidimensionalmodel)orasingleoverallfatiguefactor(aunidimensionalmodel).Breastcancersurvivors(n = 799;stagesinsituthroughIIIa;ages29–86years)wererecruitedthroughthreeSEERregistries(NewMexico,WesternWashington,andLosAngeles,CA)aspartoftheHealth,Eating,Activity,andLifestyle(HEAL)study.Fatiguewasmeasuredapproximately3 yearspost-diagnosisusingthe22-itemPFS-Rthathasfoursubscales(Behavior,Affect,Sensory,andCognition).Confirmatoryfactoranalysiswasusedtocompareunidimensionalandmultidimensionalmodels.SixcriteriawereusedtomakeitemselectionstoshortenthePFS-R:scale’scontentvalidity,items’relationshipwithfatigue,contentredundancy,differentialitemfunctioningbyraceand/oreducation,scalereliability,andliteracydemand.Factoranalysessupportedtheoriginal4-factorstructure.Therewasalsoevidencefromthebi-factormodelforadominantunderlyingfatiguefactor.SixitemstestedpositivefordifferentialitemfunctioningbetweenAfrican-AmericanandCaucasiansurvivors.Fouradditionalitemseithershowedpoorassociation,localdependence,orcontentvalidityconcerns.Afterremovingthese10items,thereliabilityofthePFS-12subscalesrangedfrom0.87to0.89,comparedto0.90–0.94priortoitemremoval.ThenewlydevelopedPFS-12canbeusedtoassessfatigueinAfrican-AmericanandCaucasianbreastcancersurvivorsandreducesresponseburdenwithoutcompromisingreliabilityorvalidity.ThisisthefirststudytodeterminePFSliteracydemandandtocomparePFS-RresponsesinAfrican-AmericansandCaucasianbreastcancersurvivors.Furthertestingindiversepopulationsiswarranted.
